Start with January Prep Days
The January Virtual Prep Days are for any student who is thinking about attending SLC. You don’t need to have everything figured out yet. These sessions help students understand what SLC is all about, the difference between the leadership track and competition, and what to expect from the experience as a whole.
Students will also learn more about Rock Eagle, the location where SLC is held. For many students, this is their first overnight conference experience, and knowing what to expect helps reduce nerves and build excitement.
Choosing the Right Competition
One of the most important steps in preparing for SLC is choosing a competition area. This doesn’t have to be something you are already an expert in, and it does not have to match your current pathway. In fact, SLC competitions are a great way to explore careers you might be interested in pursuing in the future.
Competitions are designed to introduce students to real-world tasks they might perform in a job setting. This means you’re gaining job exploration and work experience while learning new skills. The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is growth, learning, and confidence.
Know the Rubric Early
One of the best pieces of advice for SLC success is to get familiar with your competition rubric early. The rubric outlines exactly what judges are looking for and what it takes to be successful. Students who review the rubric early are better prepared, more confident, and less stressed
CTI advisers have access to competition manuals and rubrics and can help students understand expectations, timelines, and next steps. Taking time to review these materials early makes preparation feel manageable instead of rushed.
Prep Days Build Confidence
The February and March Prep Days continue to support students as they prepare, practice, and refine their skills. Each session builds on the last, helping students feel more comfortable and confident as SLC approaches.
SLC isn’t about being perfect. It’s about trying something new, learning from the experience, and building skills that will carry into school, work, and life. Starting early makes all the difference.
If you’re even thinking about attending SLC, the Virtual Prep Days are the perfect place to begin.
