Advocacy in Action: Why CTI Participates in CTSO Legislative Day

Each year, typically in February, Georgia CTI participates in CTSO Legislative Day, an event that allows students and advisers to step into the role of advocates for Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) and CTSOs across the state. Legislative Day is more than a visit to the Georgia Capitol — it is a hands-on learning experience that connects leadership, career skills, and civic engagement.

Legislators rely heavily on the viewpoints of their local constituents when making important decisions about education. By traveling to Atlanta and meeting directly with elected officials, CTSO members and advisers become an effective voice for CTAE programs and CTSOs. These conversations help legislators understand how their support directly impacts students, schools, and communities.

CTI Legislative Day

For Georgia CTI State Officers, advocacy begins even before stepping inside the Capitol. The evening prior to Legislative Day, CTI State Officers join officers from other CTSOs across Georgia for specialized training. During this time, students learn how to professionally approach legislators, practice skills such as confident handshakes, introductions, and eye contact, and participate in role-playing scenarios to prepare for conversations with busy representatives and senators. This training helps students feel confident, prepared, and respectful as they enter a professional government setting.

On Legislative Day itself, students experience state government in action. Visiting the Capitol allows them to see firsthand how laws are made and how the legislative process works. CTI State Officers also distribute small thank-you gifts to legislators as a way to express appreciation for their continued support of CTSOs and CTAE programs. This simple gesture reinforces professionalism, gratitude, and effective communication — skills students will use throughout their careers.

CTSO Legislative Day directly supports job exploration, workplace readiness, and self-advocacy. Students practice introducing themselves, speaking clearly about their experiences, and advocating for programs that have helped them grow. These are real-world skills that mirror professional environments, from interviews to workplace meetings.

Students are encouraged to share how CTI and other CTSOs have impacted them through leadership development, career exploration, skill building, and community service. These personal stories help legislators understand the value of CTAE beyond statistics and funding numbers.

CTSO Legislative Day empowers students to see themselves as leaders, advocates, and informed citizens. Georgia CTI chapters are strongly encouraged to participate in this meaningful experience, which builds confidence, professionalism, and a deeper understanding of how education, careers, and government are connected.
