Building Confidence Through CTI: Why Trying New Things Matters

Confidence doesn’t usually appear all at once. More often, it’s built slowly, one brave step at a time. That’s one of the most powerful things CTI offers students: opportunities to try something new in a space where effort is celebrated and growth is encouraged.

For many students, that first step might be competing at SLC or FLC. It could be standing in front of a judge for the first time, presenting a project, or answering questions they practiced over and over. For others, confidence grows through Emerging Leaders Days, where students push themselves physically and mentally, cheering each other on through challenges like the mud course. You’ll often see students from different schools helping one another, offering a hand, sharing encouragement, and celebrating every small victory together.

Trying new things through CTI isn’t limited to competitions. Running for State Office takes courage. So does stepping onto a stage for the talent show, whether it’s someone’s first performance or something they’ve done a hundred times before. The applause is just as loud either way. Students don’t just cheer for talent, they cheer for bravery. They cheer because they understand what it takes to put yourself out there.

CTI also creates confidence through programs like GROW, summer leadership experiences, and by simply joining a CTSO at school. Sometimes the biggest step is just showing up to a meeting, signing up for an activity, or saying “I’ll try.” Those small choices add up. Confidence grows when students realize they can do hard things, even if they’re nervous at first.

What makes CTI special is the support surrounding every one of these moments. Advisors play a huge role, encouraging students, helping them prepare, and reminding them they’re capable even when self-doubt creeps in. Schools that support CTI programs help create environments where students can explore leadership, teamwork, and personal growth. Parents provide encouragement behind the scenes, celebrating progress and effort along the way. And CTI as a whole creates spaces where students feel accepted for exactly who they are.

There’s a comfort that comes from being surrounded by people who understand. In CTI, students don’t feel like they have to explain themselves. They’re accepted for their strengths, their challenges, and everything in between. That sense of belonging makes it easier to take risks, try again, and keep going when something feels hard.

Trying new things isn’t about being perfect or winning every time. It’s about growth. It’s about learning to trust yourself, discovering new interests, and realizing you’re stronger than you thought. Whether it’s competing, leading, performing, or simply stepping outside a comfort zone, CTI helps students build confidence that lasts far beyond the event itself.

And sometimes, that confidence starts with just one brave yes.

For teachers and parents, Pre-ETS is a tool that supports what you’re already doing. It connects learning to real life, encourages independence, and helps students build skills they’ll use long after graduation.

If you’re interested in learning more or bringing Pre-ETS to your school, we’d love to talk with you. Please email georgiacti@gmail.com to start the conversation.
